Agência Brasil – ABr – According to the Ministry of Cities, inefficiency by water services causes a loss of 40% of water in Brazil. Thus, Abelardo de Oliveira Filho, head of Environmental Sanitation, reports that the National Program to Combat Water Waste will be reactivated in order to reduce waste to 20%.
Oliveira Filho says that 90% of water leakage is in home installations, mostly in bathrooms where around 78% of consumption occurs. It is estimated that annual water losses total 5,600 cubic kilometers. The size of the loss incurs other expenses, he says.
The program will work jointly with the program to economize electricity, and will have a budget of R$600,000. (AB)
