Agência Brasil – ABr – To commemorate the 14th anniversary of Ibama (Brazilian Institute for Environment and Renewable Natural Resources), the Laboratory of Forest Products (LPF) is presenting, today, the results of the project “Evaluation of Amazon Woods for Use in Musical Instruments,” coordinated by the researcher, Mário Rabelo. The pieces are eight-tone harmonicas made from ten different Brazilian wood species, which can substitute and offer advantages over foreign wood imported for this purpose. Brasília musician, Pablo Fagundes, will give a show of blues and other rhythms with the six harmonicas that he produced, under the supervision of the LPF/Ibama, for his undergraduate thesis in Forestry at the University of Brasília (UnB).
Other musical instruments, mainly strings, will be made from alternative Amazon wood species, following acoustic tests performed by the LPF/Ibama with around 50 types of wood. Ibamas objective is to aggregate value to forest products, publicize the potential of alternative species on domestic and foreign markets, and reduce wood imports for the manufacture of musical instruments.
