Federal attorney underscores progress in Indian education

Agência Brasil – ABr – Addressing the World Education Forum, federal attorney Ieda Hoppe Lamaison underscored the progress Brazil has achieved in the area of Indian education, especially through a resolution by the National Education Council creating a school model specifically geared to Brazilian Indians. According to her, this type of school meets the needs of indigenous communities, respecting their diversity, culture, habits, and traditions and orienting the teaching/learning process to Indian forms of knowledge and community social organization. The result, she explains, is the adoption of bilingual instruction, schools within indigenous areas, the formulation of a curriculum for Indian teachers, and liberty in the formulation of this curriculum.
